Claudia Retter was born in Germany, grew up in New England, and now makes her home in Columbus, Ohio. She has seen the world through the eyes of an artist and storyteller ever since she opened her first book, and inspires others to see the stories in their own lives through her exhibits, readings, and workshops. Most recently she worked with students at the Ohio State School for the Blind via a TeachArts Ohio grant to research the school’s history and create a mixed-media installation display for OSSB’s main meeting space.

Retter has received numerous accolades for both her photographic work and her handmade artist book, The Flying Adventures of Two Candy Cane Pen Friends, including an Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council, grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, and awards from the Southern Vermont Art Center and Salmagundi in New York.

Flying Adventures made its debut at Ohio’s Springfield Museum of Art in the fall of 2019 and is scheduled for exhibition at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center in March of 2024.
